The entire JDrama world was shocked last Saturday, July 18, with the news that popular actor Haruma Miura has died. According to police reports, Miura was found dead in his apartment Saturday morning. Police further reported that Miura’s manager, who was starting to worry when the actor did not show up to his scheduled appointment, decided to check up on him in his Tokyo apartment. A note was found beside the actor’s body but police are yet to confirm Miura’s intentions. Police are currently looking at the case as a possible suicide.
Miura was 30 years old. He started as a child actor in 1997 in the NHK series Agri, with him landing his first major role in the 2006 movie Catch A Wave. His name became more popular after starring as the delinquent character Hiroki Sakurai in the 2007 teen romantic tragedy film Koizora opposite Yui Aragaki. In the years that followed, Miura starred in other films and series that cemented his status as a popular actor in Japan: in 2008, he was cast as Ren Kazama in the third season of the ultra-popular live-action adaptation of anime and manga series Gokusen as well as Fujimaru Takagi in the live-action adaptation of popular manga Bloody Monday. In that year alone, Miura won numerous “Newcomer of the Year” awards, even ranking first in the prestigious Oricon year-end list of “Actors to look forward to”.
Numerous successes followed, including a short stint as an idol with his close friend and Amuse labelmate Takeru Satoh: their idol DVD, which chronicled their trip to New York, sold 12,000 copies upon release.
In 2010, Miura was cast as Shota Kazehaya in the live-action film adaptation of shoujo romance manga Kimi ni Todoke opposite Mikako Tabe as Sawako Kuronuma. In 2015, he also starred as Eren Jaeger in the two-part live-action film adaptation of Attack on Titan.
Miura is also well-loved by ONE OK ROCK fans, who know that Taka’s self-composed song “C.H.A.O.S.M.Y.T.H” is dedicated to the vocalist’s nine closest friends. Each letter in the title stands for the names of his friends, with the last letter “H” dedicated to Haruma Miura.
We at ANI.ME extend our deepest condolences to Miura’s friends and family.
