With the recent news that The Hunter x Hunter manga is coming back, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is dominating the box office, and many beloved mangas getting their anime adaptations, it’s absolutely an amazing time to be an anime fan.
As the summer anime season of 2022 is in full motion, there are many anime that are coming that will certainly keep up with the biggest anime news. Let’s take a look at some of these anime:
Overlord Season 4
Perhaps one of the biggest releases for this summer is the fourth season of Overlord. Released way back in 2015, Overlord premiered with 13 episodes. The first season built up the fanbase for the light novel-turned-anime. Written by Kugane Maruyama, Overlord follows Momonga, one of the strongest players of a popular DMMORPG (Full-Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) called YGGDRASIL.
After a successful 12-year run, YGGDRASIL’s servers are finally shut down for good. In remembering the good times, Momonga continues to play despite every player and guildmate leaving. As the inevitable shutdown arrives, Momonga finds that the game isn’t really over and he’s still present in their guild’s hideout, The Great Tomb of Nazarick.
As he explores the base, he finds that the NPCs assigned to guard the tomb are now sentient and recognize him as the one true leader. Realizing that he’s stuck in this new world, Momonga assumes the name of the guild, Ainz Ooal Gown. As if resigning to his fate, Ainz Ooal Gown explores the world and plans to leave a legacy big enough for other “players” who he believes is still in the same world, to notice.
Having reached the limits of YGGDRASIL, Ainz Ooal Gown becomes a strong figure with near God-like powers in his new world. After a successful 13-episode 1st season, Overlord returned on January 10, 2018, with season 2. The third season followed shortly, airing on July 11, 2018. The 4th season of this highly-anticipated isekai series will air on July 5, 2022.
Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou
Written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi, Made in Abyss follows a young girl named Riko. What starts out as a cute and curious anime turns into a dark, chilling dive into a mysterious subterranean world.
Riko is an aspiring delver or cave-raider who lives in an orphanage in Orth, a town that hovers above a deep hole into the ground, known as the Abyss. The Abyss is a place where remnants of former civilizations and other relics can be found. Getting a relic to the surface can translate into riches. Relics found deeper into the Abyss are considered rare and fetch more value.
However, going into the Abyss is risky as it can inflict a damaging curse on anyone who ventures in too deep. As such, measures have been to ensure that only the best delvers can go into the depths of the Abyss. Legendary cave-raiders known as the “White Whistles” are the most qualified to go into the Abyss, however, it isn’t a guarantee that they’ll come back alive.
Riko’s mother, Lyza the Annihilator, is one of the greatest White Whistles in the land. With the help of a robotic boy named Reg, Riko, ventures into the Abyss to find out more about the mysterious disappearance of Lyza. The second season which is set to air on July 6, 2022, follows directly on the events from Made in Abyss Movie 3: Dawn of the Deep Soul.
Dr. Stone: Ryusui
Dr. Stone: Ryusui is a film that follows up on the events of the 2nd season of the widely popular Dr. Stone written by Riichiro Inagaki. In the first season, viewers are welcomed to the present 2019 world, where the technologies that we know, use and enjoy exist.
However, a mysterious, cataclysmic event petrifies everyone in the world, bringing normal life to a halt. After 3,700 years, nature has taken over the world. Trees are growing everywhere and animals are plentiful. Senku Ishigami, a 15-year-old prodigy, suddenly wakes up from petrification in this seemingly mysterious world.
After studying the causes of the worldwide petrification and finding a cure, Senku’s friend Taiju Oki also awakens after being petrified. Senku finally finds out that Nitric acid can help revive petrified people. From there, Senku revives an elite martial artist named Tsukasa Shishiō and their classmate Yuzuriha Ogawa.
Senku, Taiju, and Yuzuriha agree on rebuilding modern society through science. Tsukasa however, believes that a return to the old ways will only bring destruction. He decides that society should be rebuilt upon strength and power. He leaves the group and establishes his own empire. The second season, Dr. Stone: Stone Wars, features clashes between Senku’s group and Tsukasa’s Empire. Dr. Stone: Ryusui will premiere on July 10, 2022.
Lycoris Recoil
Aside from films and follow-up seasons, this year’s summer also brings us fresh new anime. Lycoris Recoil is one of those anime. This anime will be Adachi Shingo’s directorial debut. In the past, Adachi was the animation director for notable anime such as Sword Art Online and Wagnaria!!
Lycoris Recoil’s story is about daily life in Lyco-Reco, a not-so-normal Japanese-style cafe in Tokyo. The cafe has all the usual stuff in it such as coffee, baked goods, and other food items. However, the staff also accommodates unusual orders such as taking care of kids, dealing with business, giving out romantic advice, and other errands. They also take on dangerous assignments such as dealing with zombies and huge monsters.
The cafe’s waitresses are the jolly Chisato Nishikigi, the more reserved Takina Inoue, the 30-year-old and looking for love Mizuki Nakahara, and the reluctant Kurumi. Managing the cafe is Mika, a tall dark-skinned man who fits the description of a big boss. Announced back in December 2021, there’s nothing much to read about the anime aside from the synopsis. Lycoris Recoil will premiere on July 2, 2022.
The Devil Is a Part-Timer!!
With a unique story and plot, it’s not hard for an anime like The Devil Is a Part-Timer! to get another season. The first season aired way back in April 2013. Satan is hell-bent on conquering Ente Isla but is thwarted by Emilia, the hero. Reeling from his defeat, Satan is forced back into a portal that transports him into modern-day Tokyo.
With a new world around him, Satan discovers that he is transformed into a powerless human and renames himself Sadao Maou. Sadao then finds employment in a fast-food chain named MgRonald’s(a clear parody of the Mcdonald’s franchise). As he works to help him find his way back, viewers are treated to a redemption story and see that Sadao isn’t the evil overlord that everyone fears.
After almost 10 years, the anime is finally getting a deserved 2nd season. Most of the staff and voice actors from the first season will reprise their roles in the second one. The Devil Is a Part-Timer!! will air this July 14, 2022.
