Ghost in the Shell, known in Japan as Mobile Armored Riot Police (Kokaku Kidotai) is a cyberpunk science fiction manga written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. It was first published in 1989 and was eventually compiled into tankobon volumes by Kodansha. Production I.G. has produced several adaptations of Ghost in the Shell, the first being a 1995 film of the same name. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex followed in 2002 and was released as a TV anime series. Throughout the years, the franchise saw three more films, an OVA series, and a Hollywood live-action adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson.
The story revolves around Major Motoko Kusunagi, a synthetic “full-body prosthesis” augmented-cybernetic human employed as a field commander by the anti-cybercrime Public Security Section 9.
