New Cyborg 009 Manga to be Launched this July

Yesterday we were greeted with news of a new chapter for classic science-fiction manga Space Pirate Captain Harlock. Today, we get another news of a classic manga’s revival! Akita Shoten magazine has just announced that Cyborg 009, another classic science-fiction manga, is set to get a new manga series. The new series will be penned by Tsuguo Okazaki, who gained the rights to adapt Shotaro Ishinomori’s classic sci-fi hero series. Okazaki’s works include the action sci-fi Justy manga series, as well as the art of the Macross II manga.

The new Cyborg 009 manga will be entitled Cyborg 009 Bgooparts Delete, which will launch in the next issue of Akita Shoten’s Champion RED magazine on July 19. Check out the official announcement spread from Akita Shoten below!

Cyborg 009 is the work of influential manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori, who once worked as an assistant to the Osamu Tezuka himself and eventually went on to become a pioneer of the tokusatsu superhero genre. The nine superhumans of Cyborg 009 itself is regarded as the very first superhero team created in Japan. First published in 1964, Cyborg 009’s art and story was seen to greatly reflect that of his mentor, Osamu Tezuka. It was serialized in several magazines, such as the Monthly Shōnen King, Weekly Shōnen Magazine, Shōnen Big Comic, COM, Shōjo Comic, Weekly Shōnen Sunday, Monthly Shōnen Jump, and Monthly Comic Nora. His work enjoyed critical success, ending on a high note in 1981. His work was adapted into several TV anime series and movies as well, the last one being the 2012 movie 009 Re: Cyborg.

Cyborg 009 is the story of nine humans who were engineered by the evil Black Ghost organization into becoming cybernetic superhumans. The organization’s leader, Skull, wants to use the nine cyborgs to use them as weapons and ultimately promote cyborg warfare to his benefit and profit. Before this is realized, however, Skull’s most reputable scientist Dr. Isaac Gilmore helps out the nine cyborgs to escape from Black Ghost and rebel against Skull. Armed with their cybernetic powers, the cyborgs (who are named from 001 to 009) band together to stop Skull from igniting a world war through the use of his destructive weapons.
