Attention all Fruits Basket fans! If you wish to see your favorite Furuba characters in the flesh (well, sort of), it is time to make your wishes come true, as Otakon has just announced some very special guests! Last Friday, organizers of the anime convention have announced that they will host none other than the Japanese voice actors of Fruits Basket’s Hatsuharu Soma, Yuki Soma, and our favorite ditzy heroine Tohru Honda herself! squeeaals
Hatsuharu Soma is voiced by Makoto Furukawa, who has voiced other well-known characters as well such as One Punch Man’s Saitama, Kaguya-sama: Love is War’s Miyuki Shirogane, and Fate/Apocrypha’s Rider of Red, among others.
Yuki’s voice actor Nobunaga Shimazaki has also voiced Haruka Nanase in Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club, Hyuse in World Trigger, and Makoto Sunakawa in My Love Story!, among others. In 2013, he also won the Best New Actor Award at the 7th Annual Seiyuu Awards.
Tohru’s VA Manaka Iwami is a newcomer to the seiyuu scene especially when compared to her Fruits Basket castmates. She debuted as a voice actress in 2017 as Rikosu in Children of the Whales, and has gone on to voice other characters such as Chibi in Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits and Teresa Wagner in Tada-kun Never Falls in Love. in 2019, she won the Best New Actress Award at the 13th Annual Seiyuu Awards.
Other seiyuu guests include Kikuko Inoue (Macrophage in Cells at Work!), Sayuri Hara (Chiaki Ohgaki from Laid-Back Camp), and Toru Furuya (Tuxedo Mask in Sailor Moon).
Otakon will be held from July 26 to 28 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. Previous guests that were announced include former Studio Ghibli staff member Hirokatsu Kihara, who worked on Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro. Other guests include co-founder of Studio TRIGGER Hiroyuki Imaishi, who worked on Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as former MADHOUSE president Masao Muruyama.
