Ending Impression: Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori

Synopsis

Set in a popular Japanese-style café named “Rokuhoudou”, this story star four specialists. They consist of tea specialist and café owner Sui, latte artist Gure, sweets specialist Tsubaki and cooking specialist Tokitaka. With warm smiles on their faces, they not only serve delicious meals, but they help their customers with any issue as well.

General Impression

The strongest point of the series lies in its softer and more emotional moments. From learning the characters’ stories to their contemplative moments, the series has a lot of great warmth to it. Another plus is the little mysteries that some of the main characters seem to have with their pasts. It’s interesting that different episodes of the series take its time to explore different characters and connect them to the customer. The only real downside to be found is that it could have handled its comedy better. It’s not bad, but it does take away from the general tone of the series and half the time it seems to try just a little too hard.

Ending Thoughts

One of the first things to note with the series is that it takes it’s time to explore different characters. With the main characters, given how they were introduced you would think that the main characters would be more in bringing out the customers. Instead, the series manages to give different characters a nice amount of depth to them, especially the main characters with how their pasts are presented. Out of everyone though, Sui had quite a bit built-up on his past and yet he seems to have the least satisfying resolution. Tokitaka doesn’t really count since there wasn’t much revealed on him.

It’s clear what’s going on between Sui and his brother, but it feels like we don’t get the whole picture we’re meant to. Clearly, something was resolved between the two in the end but at the same time, we don’t really get much on their story. On the plus side, the final episode managed to not go too overboard with the comedy. And overall, it gave a rather wholesome ending.

Conclusion

The series is the type of work that has an equality between its pros and cons. It excels in bringing out the slice of life genre with soft moments between characters and focusing on the dishes. On the other hand, the comedy, as stated, seems to try a little too hard. At some points, it does work in bringing a livelier tone to the series, but there are moments when the series gets just a tad weird. Overall it’s a nice series that brings nice characters but could do better on its comedy and ending.
