Ending Thoughts: Miira no Kakaita

Synopsis

Sora Kashiwagi was a simple high school boy who lived independently with his aunt. One day he receives a package from his father and fears the worst as previous gifts from his self-proclaimed “adventurer” father left a less than pleasant impression given how they ranged from cursed items to killer spirits. He fears worsen when the package reveals a large coffin, but when it opens, he finds… a mummy no bigger than his hand?!

General Impression

We are so used to supernatural series that bring out strange and unique creature that having supernatural being presented as cute as they are here is a pleasant surprise. In the beginning it seemed like the series would be more of a light-hearted comedy work that would focus on relationship build and creature antics. Surprisingly however, there was quite a bit of depth found in the series, especially on Tazuki’s, Sora’s friend part. While the relationships of the characters seemed slightly rushed but overall well done, the relationships involving Tazuki.

When you enter the series, you would think that there would be more depth placed on Sora given how he is the protagonist, but the series does some interesting character exploration on Tazuki’s part. A development that holds some drama and a solid explanation to his character as well, a nice touch in mixing up the series a bit. The only real problem is that it stretched itself out a bit too much. The foreshadowing work on one of the characters was good but for some parts of the series things were a bit rushed, mainly on the relationships between the teens and their characters. Still, those can be pretty much ignored.

Ending Thoughts

In the end the series twisted things around and made the last half as Sora’s story and character exploration. A little bit late and somewhat out of the blue but for the most part it worked really well in giving depth to Sora’s mindset and a deeper look into his and Tazuki’s relationship. Honestly though, it would have been nice to have seen more on the other characters as well, but what was presented was rather good.

The whole thing with the collector was touched on in previous episodes but a little more exploration on them could have been done. The way that the antagonist turned out to be the typical money hungry type just seems slightly disappointing yet still expected. It was still funny how he was captured by the Land God and got to see a more youkai and other details. Then we get the final half of the episodes.

It was cute, it was heartfelt, and it embodied just about everything great about the series. Basically, the ending pretty much tied a lot of things together and left an open ending into a possible next season.

Conclusion

This was a truly heartfelt series that had a whole lot of cute moments but held a nice depth to it. It had quite a bit of surprises in terms of foreshadowing and character exploration which resulted in some nice drama for the series. It could have done more exploration on other aspects and characters but for the most part this was a series that will leave you smiling at the end of each episode. If you’re looking for a light-hearted supernatural series that brings something different, this is the series to watch.
