A Live-action Series is Announced for the Kyou Kara Ore Wa!! Manga

From manga to OVA and now to live-action, “Kyou Kara Ore Wa!!” has been announced for a new live-action television series adaptation set for October in NTV’s Nichiyō Drama time slot.

Yuuichi Fukuda, the director behind “Gintama: Mitsuba hen” will be directing the series.Starring as the aspiring delinquent Takashi Mitsuhashi is Kento Kaku, the actor behind the live action Ranma Saotome.

It was noted that the director had in fact worked with the actor before on the live-action television series “Yūsha Yoshihiko to Maō no Shiro” where he played as a policeman in the 11th episode. So far, the only other noted actor for the film is Shinji Ito as the rival character Katsutoshi Imai. Other male cast/roles for the series are to be announced on April 8.

This will be the first live-action adaptation for the manga in about 21 years. “Kyou Kara Ore Wa!!” was first released in 1988 as a gag comedy manga by Hiroyuki Nishimori. Initially the series was published in Shōnen Sunday Super. It was published in the magazine from 1988 volume 9 through 1990 volume 38 before it was promoted to the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday from 1990 volume 40 through 1997 volume 47.

In December 1989 the first manga tankōbon was published and as of March 1998, the series has released 38 tankōbon volumes.

Prior to the live-action adaptation, there was OVA of the series released in April 1993. Produced by Studio Pierrot, the studio behind popular anime series, such as “Bleach”, “Naruto”, “Yu Yu Hakusho”, “Tokyo Ghoul”, “Beelzebub”, “Great Teacher Onizuka” and several others, the OVA had a total of 10 episodes.

The episodes run for 50-minutes and the entire OVA was directed by Takeshi Mori, the director behind “Vandread” and Masami Ano.

The story begins with a fateful meeting between two boys named Takashi Mitsuhashi and Shinji Itō. Coincidentally, the two of them are transferring to new schools and both of them have made decision to reinvent themselves. Now the two mill high school students have transformed themselves into delinquents and have made it their goal to biggest ones that Japan has ever seen!
