First Impression: Magical Girl Ore

Synopsis

Saki is a young girl who aims to become an idol and is in love with her best friend’s brother, Mohiro, a popular male idol. One day she encounters a yakuza which led to her shock and dismay, the revelation that her mother was a former magical girl and now the yakuza male, who is in fact the mascot behind recruiting her mother wants to recruit her. In her denial of the position she witnesses Mohiro being kidnapped she rushes out to save him. In the end she agrees to take on the contract of becoming a magical girl. However, rather than turning into a magical girl with a perky costume… she turns into a muscular man wearing a magical girl costume!?

The Good

There is no doubt that this would be one strange series given the premise, but the episode worked with that and brought out a pretty interesting foundation. It clearly poked on different tropes of magical girl and shoujo series and basically set up a parody waiting to happen. So far the most notable plus of the episode aside from the comedy is the pretty solid music, especially the ending theme. Basically, strong foundation, good comedy, and some solid music brings up the pros to watch the series.

The Bad

The moment the transformation sequence occurred and showed a second glimpse of the crotch area and all the muscles, it was clear this was going to hold a Dark Magical Girl element to it. True, gender switch works had been done before, but with the camera work that occurred, there is sure going to be some personal issues for the character in her gender. Really though, as a comedy/parody work, there isn’t much issues that can be found with the first episode. The wackiness alone makes sure of that.

Conclusion

Outside of the good and bad that were found in the episode, this writer was pretty much left speechless. The way that the episode worked its comedy while poking at different tropes hit a lot points in both good and bad ways. However, the music did tie up a lot of things and for the most part was rather catchy. The art style is pretty much all over the place but that might be the point, however, the fact that it matches the comedy work just leaves a sense of confusion and commendation to the episode.
