Synopsis
Isabella Bird is a Scottish adventuress who is known for her books and curious nature. She travels to Japan in 1878 i order to be the first Westerner to travel across remote locations and seek to study the aboriginal Ainu people. But the journey she wishes to take is a dangerous route, and in addition to this she is in need of a translator who is knowledgeable of the lands and culture. After much failed attempts in finding a translator she encounters Itou Tsurukichi, a mysterious young man who meets all her requirements. Thus begins their journey story of exploration and learning.
The Good
The first thing to note about the series is that with each chapter, there is a thought provoking moment to be found. Whether it be the protagonist discovering a struggling village or her finding beauty in things you would not expect, there are plenty of philosophical moments to enjoy with the series. It is a fascinating work that takes on a outsider’s perspective of a completely different culture that many from her society have considered as barbaric at the time. This isn’t something that you find all that much in the historical manga and it is highly refreshing.
What truly makes the story work are the characters however, the way that Isabella tackles everything with enthusiasm and curiosity yet also present a vulnerable side to her when faced with the challenges of her journey makes her very human. Complimenting her with his cynical demeanor and near unflappable personality is Itou Tsurukichi, who not only brings the general knowledge and trivia work for the series but also brings a more logical side for the work as well.
The art is also something to admire as well, from the distinct designs of the characters to all the little details placed with every location that is being visited. From story to character portrayal and overall art design, the manga presents a truly heartfelt story that takes exploration to a completely different culture and the uniqueness of the communities and their traditions.
The Bad
From the personal opinion of this writer, there are no large issues that can be said against the series itself. There is the slight issue however with the design of Itou and how in the progression of the series, very little emotional show is given to him. It can be said it is because of his general personality but overall, there could have been a better exploration of his character for the most part.
It is mainly nitpicking but for the most part there is also the progression of the journey that could have been noted as well. While not exactly large, it is little misses here and there that could have made that story even better.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for a historical story that not only involves cultural exploration but also insightful moments on tradition and people, this is the story for you. While there could have been little details that could have been improved upon more, the way that the story details the different challenges and emotional struggle they go through make up for that. The overall detail on the art and the explanation of culture in different locations are so fascination. Just everything about the work is not only fascinating and thought provoking but also highly enjoyable as well.
